Descendant of dubhodhar' (black odhar); also written Ó duibhidhir, which see; the name of a tipperary family, of leinster origin, who were chiefs of coill na manach, now the barony of kilnamanagh, in the west of that county. philip o'dwyer and owen o'dwyer were exempted from pardon for life and estate in the cromwellian act of 1652. some of the name held high rank in the service of france, austria and russia. the name is now common in all the south of ireland.
