Descendant of eidhneachán'; the name of a family of ui fiachrach in co. mayo, who were formerly proprietors of a large estate in the parishes of manulla and balla; still common in that county, sometimes pronounced Ó hÉanacháin, and anglicised bird, being erroneously supposed to be derived from 'éan,' a bird, (Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall )
