Norman, 'de courcy,' i.e., of courcy in normandy; the name of a distinguished norman family whose ancestors came to england with william the conqueror. in 1177, sir john de courcy came to ireland and having obtained from henry ii a grant of ulster, invaded that province, committing dreadful slaughter of the inhabitants. his son, milo de courcy, was created baron of kinsale by henry iii, since which time the name has been associated chiefly with co. cork, (Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall )
